Non-Profit Organizations Help Train Disabled To Snowboard
Non-profit organizations are helping to disprove the common
notion that disabled people cannot participate in sports.
They are actively training disabled people to develop skiing
and snowboarding skills and to compete in competitions.
For those that still believe that the loss of a limb makes
someone unable to play sports, I strongly recommend that
they see the film "Murder Ball", a little seen 2005
documentary about wheel chair rugby, where athletes missing
one or more limbs go all out in full contact mode to win a
championship. I guarantee that anyone after seeing this
movie will have a lot more respect for those with
disabilities among us.
Snowboarding is widely considered an "extreme sport." It
gained mass exposure and popularity in the U.S. during the
2002 Winter Olympics held in Park City, Utah. Snowboarding
can be a difficult sport to master as it combines elements
of surfing, skateboarding and skiing. Yet, these days, we're
finding more and more people with disabilities on the
snowboarding slopes.
A prime example of organizations working with disabled
persons to help them achieve their full potential is
Challenge Alaska which has worked with disabled athletes in
Alaska for over twenty years. They are a non-profit
organization that provides sports and therapeutic recreation
opportunities for those with disabilities. This past winter,
they worked with developmentally disabled students of all
ages, instructing more than one thousand lessons, to teach
them skiing and snowboarding skills.
A type of snowboarding that is becoming more popular for
those with physical disabilities is Adaptive Snowboarding.
Similar to the rugby sport mentioned above, adaptive
snowboarding allows partially disabled sportsmen and women
to participate in their sport. Although Adaptive Skiing has
been around for a while, many people are just starting to
become aware of Adaptive Snowboarding.
The sport is relatively new but manufacturers are already
beginning to develop specialized snowboards and equipment
built around the sport. Counts vary as to how many adaptive
riders there are in the country with no one having a hard
number, but everyone agrees that it's popularity is growing
rapidly. The short term goal is to eventually have Adaptive
Snowboarding included as an athletic competition in the
Winter Paralympic Games, possibly as soon as the 2010
Paralympic Winter Games in Whistler.
One organization at the forefront of teaching the sport of
Adaptive Snowboarding is the non profit U.S. Adaptive
Recreation Center at the Bear Mountain Ski Resort in
California. They have a full staff of recreational
therapists on board to lead and monitor the training. They
accept people with disabilities of all types including
blindness, autism, spinal cord injuries, missing limbs,
partial paralysis, and many others. Adaptive Snowboard
Training, consisting of one-on-one sessions, costs less than
%100 a day which includes the cost of lift tickets and
equipment.
Organizations like the Adaptive Recreation Center and
Challenge Alaska are true to the idea that we can do
anything if we put our minds to it and that our capabilities
are more than our physical limitations. They have proven
that snowboarding and other extreme sports can be enjoyed by
people with a wide variety of disabilities if they are
simply given the confidence to try and the equipment and
opportunity to shine.

and other snowboarding topics.

The Different Sides Of Davos
The town of Davos lies nestled in a lush valley between two
Swiss mountain ranges. It snakes through the valley
alongside the Landwasser River (Landwasserstrasse.) A person
may get two entirely different impressions of Davos
depending upon whom he asks. Davos is a city of dual
personalities, so to speak. Ask a sports enthusiast or
vacation buff, and one will hear of the marvelous skiing.
Ask a business person or economist, and you'll hear of
Davos, seat of politics, business and economy. After all, it
is the host city to the most renowned economic summit in
Switzerland, the World Economic Forum.
Granted, its reputation as a winter sports haven precedes
Davos' suit-and-tie image by some 100 years. One of the
earliest sporting events to be held there was speed skating.
Davos was home to numerous speed skating championships
beginning in the late 1800s.
Hockey followed closely on the heels of speed skating. The
city is still home to the Spengler Cup championship. This
annual tournament rivals only the Stanley Cup in longevity.
It is hosted by Davos' own hockey club, which was founded in
1921. Each year between Christmas and New Year's Day the
club welcomes teams from around the world.
When it comes to winter sports though, Davos is most famous
for its skiing. Its reputation as a stellar ski area has
been well established since the 1800s. Of course, many
changes have occurred since then. New technologies have led
to a ski resort town that draws thousands of tourists
yearly. Investors have poured mightily into the city. It is
currently a favourite holiday destination for visitors from
the UK and the Netherlands, and often it's a choice for
skiers who like the best between a Swiss ski holiday or ski
holidays in France
In 1971, Davos adopted a new face. This one was about as far
from ice hockey and skiing as a city can get. It was the
face of economics. The city became host to the annual World
Economic Forum. Visitors in business suits instead of ski
parkas began to converge upon the valley. They have done so
every year since. They include representatives from such
high profile organizations as Amnesty International and
Oxfam.
In fact, hundreds of organizations are represented at the
World Economic Forum. The summit attracts business people,
entrepreneurs, social activists, economists, educators and
communicators from around the globe. They meet together to
discuss solutions to poverty, injustice, war, global warming
and genocide. They brainstorm ways to shape the world
economy in ways that are mutually beneficial to all
countries. They challenge each other to make a difference in
their own homes and countries.
The World Economic Forum, a non-profit organization based in
Geneva, has become a global force. It carries enormous
political clout. This is due in part to its strategic
positioning of political figures within the organization's
governance. The foundation places influential people in
positions such as the board of directors. Former British
Prime Minister Tony Blair is one example of such a leader.
This doesn't just give it leverage in all the right places.
It also lends it an air of credibility in the eyes of the
public.
This credibility doesn't hurt Davos' credibility either.
Davos, still a winter sports Mecca, has also earned a
reputation as a seat of thinkers, movers and shakers.
Davos in Switzerland, still a winter sports Mecca, has also
earned a reputation as a seat of thinkers, movers and
shakers. Its many sides have given it a permanent position
in the public eye and the world map.

Beautiful Newfoundland Canada
Newfoundland is one of the most beautiful provinces in
Canada and has become a vacation spot for anyone who loves
to participate in all that nature has to offer. There are
several outdoors activities that the whole family can become
involved in and fully enjoy including skiing and hiking.
Hiking is at its finest in the Newfoundland province. You
can hike the Trans Canada Trial which leads to every
province in Canada. The Tans Canada Trail is over twenty
thousand kilometers long so you will probably only want to
hike a very small portion of that trail.
Skiing has always been and still is one of the sports that
make Newfoundland a distinctive destination in Canada. There
are many different areas that are open in the cooler months
for skiing including the Marble Mountain area in Steady
Brook. There is even a snow school for anyone who has not
had skiing experience to learn the ropes involved in this
sport.
Skiing takes on a new life in the beautiful mountains of
Canada which are filled with all of the traditional foods
and culture of the country. Moose is a particularly
interesting food and certainly something that the
adventurous members of your family will enjoy trying at
least once.
If you are in Newfoundland on a hiking trip then you will
encounter some of the various wildlife first hand as you
wander around the region. Moose are the most common animals
that one finds in the area although there are plenty of
birds and small mammals there to observe.
The Gos Morne National Park offers hundreds of animals
including bears and fish that make their home in the
Newfoundland area. You will also want to spend some time
observing the birds of the area since there are over two
hundred different varieties in the park.
The cities of Newfoundland are quaint and offer a wide
variety of home cooked meals for everyone to enjoy. The
specialties of the region include the traditional fish and
chips as well as a wide variety of seafood dishes. The town
of St. Johns is a must visit in Newfoundland since it boasts
a traditional Irish atmosphere that is unique to the region.
St. Johns offers charming bed and breakfast lodging that
will make even the most cautious traveler feel right at home
since the people in the town are just as friendly as the
friends you already have.
Newfoundland is a wonderful place to visit offering both
sports activities and wonderful homemade foods and crafts

Wintering In Vienna
Vienna has beautiful skiing resorts in its vicinity. It is
hard to imagine in Vienna that snowy peaks are one hours
drive away but that?s all it takes to get to Semmering,
traditional fresh air spot for the city. Semmering can be
crowded of course but its homey atmosphere and wide
selection of winter sports make up for it. Beginners start
on an almost flat bunny hill and for really little ones a
ski playground is offered. If the kids don?t fancy skiing
then rent a sledge. Across the road the larger slope has a
dozen ski runs, a sledging run all the way down from the top
and a lovely cross country trail around the back. February
is time for the traditional Austrian ski holiday. The snow
is piling up thick and deep in the glorious Austrian Alps,
calling us to escape the miasma of Vienna.
St. Corona am Wechsel also about an hour south west of the
city has been recommended by ski instructors as a good place
to start small children. The couple that heads the ski
school has small children of their own. Several locals have
also recommended Annaberg to the southwest of St. Poelten.
The piste is 400 m long and is served by a t-bar lift. It
features snow cannons and flood lights and allows therefore
for night-time skiing.
?tscher is a 19 km of beautifully prepared slopes;
cross-country skiing tracks and a Snow park for boarders
await you in the skiing region ?tscher, situated just about
2 hours ride from Vienna In Gastein one can experience a
piste world of superlatives- Extensive ski areas with
modern lift facilities up to an altitude of 2700 meters.
More than 200km of best prepared runs as well as quite a
number of deep snow runs, mogul pistes mean the ultimate in
piste variety. This region affords everything even the most
ambitious winter sports enthusiast could wish for.
In 1966, the excellent results of the Austrian ski-team
during the Olympic Games in Italy triggered ecstatic public
interest in skiing. The Viennese major decided it was time
to open a skiing piste in Vienna. Hohe Wand Wiese was
designed and accordingly the piste became a location for
skiing races of international caliber. ?Hohe Wand Wiese? is
situated within city limits and can be reached by public
transport.
Hirschenkogel is proud of its well cared for slopes. It is
also the largest late night skiing resort in Austria: 6 of
its slopes and the fun park are well lit and allow for night
time skiing until 10 p.m. There are ski runs for all - total
beginners, families and children, snowboard freaks and
freestyle skiers. Its slopes feature modern lifts, scenic
views and a snow guarantee. Hirschenkogel also has extensive
facilities for toboggan fans. Also, huts and restaurants
offer apr?s-skiing, for those, who haven?t burnet up enough
energy on the slopes. Skiing is a national passion and it a
favorite pastime for the winter. Enjoy Skiing in Vienna.
